Title: Every SD card has max access time over 2.5ms - issue with SD2SNES Pro?
Post by: Emerl on April 25, 2021, 01:15 AM
After experiencing skipping in the MSU-1 version of Roadblaster, I looked into it and saw that it's likely an SD access time issue, and that sub-2ms peak access time is suggested.

I have tried at least 6 SD cards, and the all test roughly the same in the SD2SNES Pro menu - 0.3ms avg, 2.8-3.5ms max. This doesn't change depending on how full they are. I've tried several on the recommended list, including the silver top 128GB Sandisk, the gold top 128GB Sandisk, and the silver top 200GB Sandisk. I'm starting to think this is an issue with my SD2SNES Pro. Has anyone else experienced this?

Should I not be testing via the SD2SNES menu? Has anyone purchased a card recently that's sub-2ms?

Likely it would be better to not use the MSU-1 version of Super Road Blaster and you shouldn't run into that problem, though I didn't know the SD2SNES supported the awesome silver top 128GB sandisc micro SD HC X1 as I only used it for my emulation station that is the GBA X5.

someone talking nonsense again
Super Road Blaster in msu1 format only

recent years sandisk products using super cheap slow flash memory with speed booster chip to fake the actual speed
sd2snes direct access flash memory bypass speed booster chip
try different brands

There's also a MegaCD version of Road Blaster. Do you have a specific recommendation for a brand? I've also tried Samsung microSDs and they tend to have worse max access times than the Sandisks.

Sandisk, Kingston, anything not a cheap piece of crap off name brand should suffice

I've tried Sandisk Ultra (128 and 200 GB) and Extreme (128 GB). Both are high end models, both have max access times of 2.8-3.5ms

they ( Ultra & Extreme ) are worse for flash carts

i'm using Kingston Canvas Select 128GB in my sd2snes

SD2SNES sys info menu
sd maker / oem: 0x27, "PH"
sd product name: "sd128" rev 6.0
sd acc. time: 0.386 / 0.766 ms avg/max

anything below 1ms good for msu1 video

The list was unfortunately why I got the Sandisk Ultra. I'll try a Kingston Canvas Select. I assume it has to be the out-of-print Canvas Select, rather than the current Canvas Select Plus? It looks like it's still in stock on Amazon. Hopefully not counterfeit, or the newer version mislabeled.
