Title: MSU-1 hacks...
Post by: kmksoulja on January 02, 2015, 06:28 AM
MegaMan X was done with audio

http://www.retrocollect.com/News/super-nintendo-mega-man-x-updated-with-cd-quality-soundtrack.html

and apparently so was Rock N Roll Racing but I can't find the sound files for it.

RNR Racing is a blast with MSU-1. The patch released is a roll your own though and takes a little while to get going because he doesn't supply any of the music. I used one of the YouTube to MP3 sites to get the appropriate audio and then Audacity to get it info the PCM format. The fun thing is that you can use whatever music you want. I did Radar Love which I'm guessing must be exclusive to the Genesis port since it wasn't in the track listing.

Rock N Roll Racing soundtrack....

Rock N Roll Racing IPS Patch....http://www.mediafire.com/download/fhax4j3i9cqcqu8/RockNRollRacing_MSU1.zip

This is what MMX with MSU1 should sound like....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nby1jjC_GVs, and this is what RNRR should sound like.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MG1xXeLspw

Like Zelda, I had more problems getting the patches to work on the roms I had.  I downloaded and tried several.  A guy on youtube helped me out with a pre-patched MMX file.  I don't get it, I never had this problem patching roms in the past.  So still trying to get Rock n Roll Racing to work.

So still trying to get Rock n Roll Racing to work.
"Rock n' Roll Racing (USA).sfc" is the rom to use with the IPS patch.

I just redid mine from scratch to verify.

What's strange is the yellow LED is on, indicating the SD2SNES is streaming data from the SD Card.  But it's still the original music.  So now I am wondering if whoever packged the ZIP of the PCM audio screwed up and didn't use the "replacement" audio?  Then when I checked the video made by Shiryu, I think he played a trick on us....

My advice is just download the MP3's yourself, convert them to STEREO WAV 44.1khz, and run the create_pcm.bat file.  may need to play around with the volume level on the wave files.

Need to use a rom with a header as stated in the instructions, even though they have the crc32 for the non-headered rom listed on the page.  link to music files is in the docx file in zip.

I really love these MSU projects/hacks.
But I'm finding it really confusing as to how I they work since you have to assemble, download, patch, organize and all that stuff before you have a functional folder with everything needed.
Even after reading those readme files, I still seem to screw it up :/

Not sure if you saw it or if it'll help in your case, but you might check my post here (http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=2309.msg23757#msg23757) or the description on the youtube video linked in that post. I try to simplify it as much as possible using the Zelda hack that was done a while back.

I am on firmware v1.6. I will wait until the 1.7 stable version is released to try again. At this point I am thinking it is with the Top Gear 2 patch that needs to be tweaked and not the firmware.

By the way, not to appear ungrateful - I would like to thank all of the authors of these MSU1 patches for their hard work!

Remember that you need to reset the snes after saving for all MSU-1 games. Hold reset a few seconds so that it resets to the SD2SNES menu, not to game's title screen.

A member here already did a hack for the SF2 games but sadly, he won't release any of them. We'd only need the hack itself, getting and changing the audio files is the easy part and something we could do ourselves. Hard to believe nobody else has done or released one yet.

That's a shame. It would be pretty cool to use the arcade and HD Remix soundtracks on all 3 SFII SNES versions.

Here's some other games that I think would benefit from MSU1 soundtrack replacement:
* BS Legend of Zelda (original NES music or the music that streamed during the original broadcast)
* BS Legend of Zelda AST (music that streamed during the original broadcast)
* Captain Commando (Arcade music)
* Castlevania: Dracula X ("Rondo of Blood" PC Engine CD music)
* Doom (PC soundtrack)
* Dragon Quest I+II (original NES music or Symphonic Suite soundtrack)
* Dragon Quest III (original NES music or Symphonic Suite soundtrack)
* Final Fantasy IV/II (Celtic Moon, Piano Collections, NDS/PC, or PSP soundtracks)(Video from PC version)
* Final Fantasy V (Dear Friends or Piano Collections soundtracks)(Video from PS1 version)
* Final Fantasy VI/III (Grand Finale or Piano Collections soundtracks)(Video from PS1 version)
* Final Fight (Arcade music)
* Killer Instinct (Arcade/Killer Cuts soundtrack)
* Mortal Kombat series (Arcade or MK9 music)
* Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (original NES music)
* Star Ocean (First Departure PSP music)
* Street Fighter Alpha 2 (Arcade music)
* Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Arcade music)
* Super Mario All-Stars (original NES music)
* Super Smash TV (Arcade music)
* Super Star Wars Trilogy (movie soundtracks)
* Tetris + Dr. Mario (original NES or GB music)
* UN Squadron (Arcade sountrack)
* WWF series (real wrestler entrance music)

Actually, we're in the final stages of BSZ and AST right now over at the BS Zelda forums - we got a bunch of voice actors together and hunted down the original broadcast music for them all, and all we're waiting on now is the audio guys to put all the voice files and backing tracks together for release.  Current word is that BSZ will be out in a week or two, with AST following after.

I'm probably just an idiot, but I can't get most of the MSU hacks to work even though I feel that I've followed the instructions very close.

The Super Metroid on seems to work. And so does the Rock'n Roll Racer.

But I've tried so many times with the Zelda MSU on to no avail. It plays the opening title screen, but when I press start, the screen goes black and nothing happens.
The Mega Man X and Donkey Kong Country 2 ones don't even boot up at all.
I really don't know what I'm doing wrong here. Kinda wish there were just a finished zip that is ready to unpack and just works.
There were also one with Bad Apple, but that looks like something you have to compile yourself, which I don't know the first thing about doing. :/

Give us some hardware details.  Are you trying this on Higan/BSNES or the SD2SNES flash cart?  Are you applying the patch to a headered or unheadered ROM?  Where do you have the music files unzipped to?
Title: Re: MSU-1 hacks...
Post by: Captain N on September 13, 2015, 04:19 AM
I don't have a clue about the header stuff. I just took what seemed as the most plain version of the rom and applied the patch with Lunar IPS and put it into the same folder as the SNES music files along with a blank file called [romname].msu

I'm trying to get it to work on the SD2SNES.
The newest firmware didn't work well for me, so I believe I'm running the v0.6.
Title: Re: MSU-1 hacks...
Post by: RetroDanâ„¢ on September 13, 2015, 05:24 AM
As far as the Zelda Rom is concerned, you need to expand the ROM to 1.5Mb (12 Mbit) before applying the patch - user LunarExpand, easily found on romhacking.net.

http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/27/ (http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/27/)

The newest firmware for SD2SNES is brilliant, so my first thought is "is your SD2SNES legit?"
Title: Re: MSU-1 hacks...

Okay, so I've expanded a new alttp rom to 1.5mb and then patched it, but the problem is the same. After I press start on the title screen, it just goes black.

I bought my SD2SNES from StoneAgeGamer, and haven't had any trouble with it so far. But these MSU hacks is giving me a lot of problems for some reason.
I've gotten some of them to work, but Zelda, Mega Man, DKC2 and Bad Apple just wont.

If I might make a suggestion, get your ROM from emuparadise - you might be applying the patch to a headered ROM, and if I recall correctly, the patch needs to go on an UNheadered ROM.  Some tools, like SNESROMUTIL, can strip that header away.

I am surprised nobody has suggested Super Castlevania IV as a possible MSU-1 hack...

Also, are cutscenes in existing games now possible?

As to Super Castlevania IV...well, I hate that game more than almost any other game.  I can't exactly say I'm holding my breath for an MSU-1 patch for it.

As far as I know, yes, cutscenes are possible.  It would involve hijacking code during an in-game event to call up a video and run the audio with it, and then resuming the normal in-game operations where it had been hijacked.

I don't like the way it looks, and I don't like the way it plays.  It feels less like a Castlevania game and more like a knock-off of a Castlevania game.  I really can't say specifics, only that I tried to play the game several times, and I just gave it up because I wasn't having ANY FUN.

I admit that it has a good soundtrack (good, not great), but despite me loving the NES Castlevanias (yes, even Simon's Quest), I just can't get into IV.

anybody know where i can find the chrono trigger msu-1 hack with the PCM audio files included?

The audio files are not free, but they aren't expensive, either.  Just drop $24 on Blake Robinson's albums and support his work.

Title: Re: MSU-1 hacks...
Post by: RetroDanâ„¢ on September 28, 2015, 08:21 AM
You need to extract all the .zips to SEPARATE folders, one for Vol 1, one for Vol 2, and one for Vol 3.  These folders need to be placed INSIDE the directory with the make_music_pack.bat.  The Folders need to be named "Chrono Trigger Symphony Vol 1 (FLAC)", "Chrono Trigger Symphony Vol 2 (FLAC)", and "Chrono Trigger Symphony Vol 3 (FLAC)".

Also, the zlib.dll doesn't work for the sox.exe.  You need to download the newest zlib1.dll from zlib.net/zlib128-dll.zip (http://zlib.net/zlib128-dll.zip) and place it in the same folder as sox.exe.

Yes and no. It's not that simple. First off if a game doesn't have existing tools for it, it gets a lot harder to hack to find how the game handles its music and finding the tracks. I'm no expert by any means but I have discussed it with people who do know what they are doing. Another thing too is that the music has to be converted and edited in order to be used. All in all it takes a lot of work to get one made especially to make it bug free or at least in a usable state for a user friendly patch usually in the form of an IPS patch. If you go to www.zeldix.net and make a request in the MSU1 section they will add it to an ever growing list of game people requested. zeldix is also where a lot of the great MSU1 hackers are located.

I'd like to have it with this guy's music--Krzysztof SÅ‚owikowski https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3a66Guoo_c --he did X3 and I think it's the best music ever. The music is done for X2 on his channel. He's currently remaking X1's music because he doesn't like the way it came out the first time (he used downtuned guitars and is going to use standard for the remake).

Hi, yesterday arrived my SD2SNES. All works like it should. Then I've tested some MSU-1 hacks like F-Zero and SMW. Now there is a little problem with the volume. Some music is louder than other? In SMW menu I have to increase the volume and ingame I have to decrease it. Is this normal?!

yeah its normal. the patch sucks and whoever made it didn't normalize the sound volumes of the different tracks.

The patch itself is not my work. I searched almost 2 years to find one helping me with it. The soundtrack was already done at that time. So after we found out what to do and Mattrizzle made the patch from Con really working, we had a working game ^^ http://www.dkc-atlas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=2073

Title: Re: MSU-1 hacks...
Post by: hunterk on December 17, 2015, 04:36 PM
I don't think the patch itself dictates the volume but rather the pcm files. So, yes, you can normalize them yourself but it requires having the original, unconverted files (usually in mp3 or flac format), normalize those and then convert the normalized files to the required pcm format using an msu1 conversion tool.
Title: Re: MSU-1 hacks...
Post by: D4v3WTF on December 18, 2015, 07:24 PM
Hey, thanks for the answer! Hmm, would it be possible to open the *.pcm files and normalize them? This would be easier as download the MP3 files, convert and rename them.

Greetings

Possibly. They're apparently mostly-normal PCM files, just with a weird header...? I don't know of anything that can open them directly, though.

i like devs making these things and appreciate it hard,but if you follow the guide and it doesnt work,what can we do then with that guide.
after many tries i got it working,pfffffffff.

...So, patching the ROM with the patch and downloading a .zip file, unzipping that file in the folder with the patched ROM, and making sure the ROM name matches the name of the audio files is too confusing?  Honestly, sounds like you didn't do any reading on it at all.

A guy at emuparadise in the forums was awesome enough to have most of the MSU 1 hacks already set up and uploaded. http://www.epforums.org/showthread.php?101813-Nintendo-SNES-Mod-ROM-SET-MSU-1-Patched-Games-for-SD2SNES (http://www.epforums.org/showthread.php?101813-Nintendo-SNES-Mod-ROM-SET-MSU-1-Patched-Games-for-SD2SNES) if this is against forum rules I apologize and will remove it asap if it is.

Thanks for your help.

Can I suggest a request for a MSU-1 patch for Donkey Kong Country 3 on SNES with the Donkey Kong Country 3 music score for Game Boy Advance done by David Wise? He´s the original composer of the first two games on the SNES but for some reason he did the soundtrack of the third one just for the GBA version.

I would love to play this! Thank you coders for all your AMAZING work!

Already thought about the same when I went and made the remix pack for DKC2 waaay before anyone made the patch for me. Problem with GBA sounds is the HIGH pitched sound and missing base made for the small speakers in there. That's why I did not choose them at all. They sound awful compared to the remixes I found. I even blindly compared them all to the others I found and none passed my audiophile ear tests. I prefer instrumental/orchesteral ones and for some ... exceptions even metal covers fit nicely. Like for boss tracks.

Here some I would suggest to fit way better. I love the original tracks and not the remade ones tbh, so these are remixes of the original SNES one keeping the original flair (Quick check for tracks, so no blind test here, DKC2 remix pack took me about a year to polish):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TlvcUQOjNw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZISLq0M1WE or
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcxQznDe4u8 (Vincent Rubinetti does great tracks, I used one of his remixes in DKC2 too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ej0YeHWPh1E)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILDUH5rv4uQ (Another of my sources from DKC2)
https://soundcloud.com/dsjmusic/donkey-kong-country-3-water
https://soundcloud.com/pigmask-colonel/sets/donkey-kong-country-3-1 (Orchestra, some stuff maybe, but by far not all of em)

I dislike the ones from OCRemix for being waay too different. If you like, I would try the same I did for DKC2 in the past once more for DKC3. (Meaning, dig deeeeeep inside soundcloud, youtube and some resampling original SPC for sound effects) Maybe Mattrizzle might help with the patch again ^^

Sidenote for DKC1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZmyMEPmiqw I just like this guy ^^
https://soundcloud.com/fran-c-rdenas/donkey-kong-country-music (Not fitting for a pack, but funny idea :P)

Most source don't include all sources, so here the list and the original cry for help regarding a patch http://www.dkc-atlas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=2073

Thx (But don't forget that I just selected and looped the remixes, the real ASM hardcore work was Mattrizzle) ^^
I asked Mattrizzle for some of his time. Lets see if he has some time, then I will make the GBA pack to show the flaws of these tracks AND make a remix one. (I hope a bit faster than last time. ^^)

Thank you for doing this.

Would anyone with the knowledge be able to do The Chaos Engine with Amiga quality music (/2013 Steam version)? It's a classic in the UK but outside was pretty unknown. The soundtrack's a great example of early 90s rave music you wouldn't usually hear on the SNES.

(To go a step further it'd be great to have an NTSC 60Hz version hacked to change the name from the horrible Soldiers of Fortune, and on both versions to change the scientist back to the preacher to remove that console censorship. Anyway...)

I would love to see Toy Story with the music from the PC version. Here's a quick comparison:

PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpZoQQfqLJA

SNES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mys_x8k8c1I

Could maybe even use the intended 'You've got a friend in me' in the main menu instead just like the other versions do (SNES version even has that song inside the game rom, it just wasn't chosen for licensing reasons). And also play it between levels and at the end credits (unlike the SNES version which is silent).

One thing I noticed about SmokeMonster's SF2 Turbo upload is that there's no original CPS1 soundtrack version. He has one labelled as CPS2, where the opening demo has the CPS1 music but, everything else is the CPS2 soundtrack. Just a heads up.

Here you go. One 3DO SSF2 soundtrack.

https://mega.nz/#!NvBTSKqa!8yhXWVOfcWuZ4ALez1Av0Ban5VIuWf6GatvT3_oUoKA

And in case you want to change the volume of the original WAV's before I converted them you can download the file from the link below. They're trimmed and loop ready, with a batch file included with all the loop points assigned already. Just throw the WAV's and the batch file into the folder with your WAV2MSU.exe after you've finished editing them and it'll generate the PCM's with the proper loop points. The volume should be fine overall, though. I test my MSU games with BSNES Classic and they translate well to SD2SNES volumes.

No problem.

I'd advise you to download Conn's latest patch for Super SF2: http://bszelda.zeldalegends.net/stuff/Con/ssf2_tnc.zip

And edit the patched ROM with a hex editor to change these codes:
Code: [Select]
keep full volume each round transition instead fading to half:
03/fed73: 40 -> ff
03/fed79: 40 -> fb
03/fed83: 40 -> ff

It makes the ROM more arcade like now with the music playing continuously between rounds.

Also the latest patch for SF2 Turbo with the following codes below: http://bszelda.zeldalegends.net/stuff/Con/sf2_turbo.zip

Code: [Select]
theme restarts playing each round:
02/70316: f0 35 -> ea ea
02/703c0: ea ea ea -> 9c b7 1c
02/703d9: d0 0f -> 80 07

fade to zero each round transition instead fading to half:
02/70463: 40 -> 00
02/70469: 40 -> 05
02/70473: 40 -> 00

The tracks fade out at the end of the round as opposed to them stopping abruptly, making this more arcade like too.

Relikk, thanks for the links to the MK soundtrack hacks. The MKII MSU1 hack also works in conjunction with SCD's Minor Fixes hack. https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3478/ (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3478/)

Also, thank you for the NES soundtrack for Super Mario All-Stars. It also thankfully works in conjunction with BMF54123's SMB/Lost Levels Brick Fix. https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/167/ (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/167/)

I do have a few critiques though.

* The SMB1 "coin heaven" bonus areas play the underground coin bonus area music instead of the invincible music like they should. I'm sure this is due to the fact that the two bonus areas share the same music on the unpatched ROM.
* When you Save and Quit in SMB2 and 3, other incorrect music tracks start playing.
* The biggest issue is the SMB3 tracks. SMB1 and 2 sound fine, but SMB3 is way off pitch from the actual NES tracks.
* I wish the music sped up when the timer reached 100, but I'm sure that's probably not possible.

Most likely. There is a way to check. Which stage in particular is this referencing?

* When you Save and Quit in SMB2 and 3, other incorrect music tracks start playing.

I'll check it out. It could be a patch related problem.

* The biggest issue is the SMB3 tracks. SMB1 and 2 sound fine, but SMB3 is way off pitch from the actual NES tracks.

Which tracks in particular. It sounds fine to me. You may get some dissonance from time to time as they've been converted to stereo and you're not used to hearing them that way.

* I wish the music sped up when the timer reached 100, but I'm sure that's probably not possible.

If I remember correctly the unpatched ROM gives a timer warning and speeds the music, so I don't know why it doesn't do this with the MSU1 patch. It should be possible, but you would have to ask Conn on the Zeldix forum to see if he can fix it, or if he has a reason as to why it doesn't do that. We'd also have to create a new set of PCM's for the faster music if it can be fixed.

Any of the coin bonus areas. Like the pipe you can go down in 1-1 or the vine you can climb in 2-1. I'm sure it's because both areas in the SNES version use this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QZo-NZV_5M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QZo-NZV_5M) instead of different songs like the NES version.

All Mario 3 tracks. I don't think being converted to stereo is the issue, as if that were the case, it would cause Mario 1 and 2 to sound different as well, but they sound correct. I'm no audio expert, but they just sound like something is off. If you listen to it side by side on an NES or NES emulator, you can hear that they don't sound the same. So far, I've only tried this hack out on SNES9x and not the SD2SNES or higan, but I don't think that would make a difference.

* I wish the music sped up when the timer reached 100, but I'm sure that's probably not possible.

The SPC warning music is there at 100, but the PCMs obviously don't speed up. I'm sure that's a limitation of the MSU1 format, and like you said, you'd have to make a new set of faster PCM tracks in order to make it work correctly.
Title: Re: MSU-1 hacks...
Post by: Relikk on April 09, 2018, 12:30 PM
Creating new PCM's isn't a problem and wouldn't add much to the overall file size, the problem would be trying to convince Conn to make that aspect of the patch work.

With regard to SMB3, you're correct, in that it doesn't share the same quality in terms of clarity that the other two games share. I admit I didn't quite catch that when I was putting them together. I'll see if I can source a better quality "stereo" set, or if you come across one yourself you can let me know, and it's always possible just to create an alternate set that uses the original, unaltered mono tracks.

You'll need to patch the ROMs with the .ips or .bps patches supplied on Zeldix, and download the PCM packs for the music tracks.

newbie question. I've been wondering where people source the audio for the MSU1 files. The only one I've done so far has been Link to the Past and it's pretty amazing to hear that kind of audio out of the SNES.
Title: Re: MSU-1 hacks...
Post by: Relikk on July 23, 2018, 05:14 PM
MSU1 is capable of 16-bit/44.1kHz audio, in other words CD quality audio. So the source really should be a lossless one, sourced from soundtrack CD's, directly recorded from arcade PCB's or original music created in DAW's.

You can, of course, source music from YouTube, but the quality would severely downgraded as it's compressed (like MP3) and you're essentially wasting the capability of MSU1.

Yeah. I sourced the Gradius III tracks I created from CD, but not from that particular release, as the audio on that has a lot of reverb and effects at the beginning of tracks.

This is the one I used: https://vgmdb.net/album/21897

Mostly finished. Few kinks to work out, nothing that affects gameplay. And obviously MSU1 code hasn't been added to the Redguy SA-1 beta yet, so this won't work properly on an SD2SNES until it can be added.

On the subject of DOOM in an MSU pack, I think it would be more fitting to add Andrew Hushult's remake of the soundtrack rather than just the original MIDIs converted to sampled audio, but alas, this is an MSU pack we are talking about, and the audio could be anything we want. The ROMhacking is the true challenge.

RedGuy said that MSU-1 didn't fit with the SA-1. That being said, that pack could still be used with SNES9x and Higan like other SA-1 games too, so it's not a total loss.  :)

Is there a complete soundtrack out there? Seems like it's only a couple of tracks. It can be done easily as long as it was complete and somebody was interested in doing it.

Nearly all the hacks, their patches and soundtracks originate from Zeldix.net. You can download all you need, except the ROMs themselves, from the links in the articles there.

I'm having trouble getting the Super Road Blaster msu-1 rom to work with my sd2snes. I get the Msu-1 logo, and then a notification that it can't play track 79 and I can't go any further. Does anybody have a specific walk through to get this to work? I have no issues with any other Msu-1 roms.

It seems like you're missing that track, or your download was corrupted because it should work if you got that far. Download it again, and make sure you're downloading it from the original dforce3000 link.

Interesting, I thought MSU-1 was too big to fit with SA-1 at the same time

It is. From the hack's web page (google translated):

Quote
NOTE: For now, although support for games with special chip SA-1 (Ex: Mario RPG) in SD2SNES is implemented, it is not yet possible to play them in its MSU-1 version. Perhaps in future upgrades of the SD2SNES firmware there will be support of the SA-1 + MSU-1 games.

You will have to use Higan if you want to play this hack.

Officially it is, unofficially it isn't.

A while ago Smokemonster apparently streamed, or made a video, demonstrating an SD2SNES SA-1 core with MSU1 capability, but then deleted the video. We'll just have to wait and see.

So after hearing the A Link To The Past soundtrack with the Ocarina of Time soundfont (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz0R17apW8Gx6ttUKGWYVxOlF0urUTaj7), I think it'll be awesome if someone made a MSU-1 hack of it for ALTTP.

If you can persuade the author to provide you with the original lossless audio files, I'll gladly do it.

What about a lossy version, i.e., using the youtube source?

If anything comes up I'll probably let you know via PM.

I was listening to it earlier through earphones via the YouTube link. The quality wasn't great. Some of them sounded like they were in mono as well (whether that's intentional or not, I don't know), if you compare "Kakariko Village" or the "Overworld" theme to "Turned Into A Rabbit" you can clearly hear the difference.
