Title: SD2SNES + Super Nt boot problems with controller connected
Post by: ifightdragons on February 18, 2019, 07:30 PM
Ok, so here's a weird one...

I can only use the SD2SNES with my Super Nt if I boot the system WITHOUT a controller plugged in. Then I can plug in the controller after booting and it works like normal, most of the time. The system will still turn itself off sometimes.
It's super weird, and I can't for the life of me figure out why this would happen.

Both my Super Nt and SD2SNES are updated with the latest official firmware. The SD2SNES has no problems on original hardware, and the Super Nt has no problems with any other cartridges.
I am using original PAL SNES controllers without any controller extensions.

Does anyone have any insights as to what might be causing this?

The funny thing is that it is apparently happening to other users, like ColemanDF who wrote about it in this thread:
https://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=7392.msg57199#msg57199

Edit: Tried booting with a crappy third party controller from eBay plugged, and wouldn't you know, it worked more consistently. Not perfect still though, the system will still crash sometimes, but not as often. But still, this is quite baffling to me. Hopefully someone can lay down some wisdom.

My first thought is what are you using for a power supply? What's the max amperage? I know SD2SNES has a higher power draw than run-of-the-mill carts, so I wonder if that might be it.

I am using the included micro USB cable that came packaged with the Super Nt, which is plugged into a USB power adapter (1000mA) which goes into my wall socket. Could this be the problem?

1 amp should be enough unless you are sharing the adapter across two USB devices (like charging a phone at the same time using the same adapter you are using for the Super Nt). But man, it sure sounds like a power issue, especially if having a controller plugged in seems to sometimes make a difference.

2A sounds like a better idea IMO.

Thanks for your replies, very helpful! It does seem like a power issue, so I went and ordered a couple 2A power adapters to test it out. I found by googling that Analogue recommends 2A power supplies for their systems, so it seems like this could be the culprit.

This has been a thorn in the side for a while. I was almost at the point where I considered getting either a new SD2SNES or Super Nt...
Oh, who am I kidding? As soon as SD2SNES Pro drops, it's hook, line, and sinker!

No Samsung charger around or stuff like that? Anyways, good that this might be the easy fix to do ^^ And YES, I will buy it too, even though I have my ikari signed first public batch cart here ^^

IF they recommend a 2A power supply why don't they include one?

THAT... is the million dollar question. Not a fan of this newfound trend of not including power supplies with products. Nintendo has been guilty of it too (Various 3DS models and the Classic consoles)

Hi guys, I’m using an 1A iPhone power socket on my Super NT with an SD2SNES and one 8BitDo Retro Receiver without any problems.

When I get home i'll have to check what power supply i'm using for my Super NT and SD2SNES. I could have swore it came with a little usb brick to use? If it didn't than I am definitely using one that comes with Iphones(bought a few oem ones on ebay). Works perfectly though.

The plot thickens...

Man, I'm going to be pretty bummed if low amperage is not the issue.
I wouldn't even know how to troubleshoot this beyond that.
It's clearly something that could affect others, seeing as I'm not the only one who's had this exact issue.

check your super nt settings for:
control settings
system boot settings
also make you are on firmware 4.5 or 4.7 not 4.6

Mine came with a power brick. If they recommend 2A I would figure that it is a 2A power brick. But I have no idea.

If worse comes to worse you could always contact Analog and ask for a board or console exchange depending on what you're most comfortable with doing.

I watched a youtuber's channel where his problem was he either got a Super NT that didn't work out of the box or it stopped powering on after about a day of play, I forget which.

Anyway he contacted Analog and I believe if memory serves correct they had him send in his defective board and then sent him a new board which he quickly swapped out since apparently doing so is easy once you get the rubber mat pulled off the bottom of the console and just unscrew a few areas.

And voila things worked perfectly for him after that.

Also if for some reason Analog didn't send you a USB to wall plug converter thingamabob I highly recommend these two products from amazon below. I'd of linked em for ya, but I don't think the links were going to work, so you can just search for these exact terms on amazon if you're interested.

AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to Micro B Cable, 10 feet, Black

AmazonBasics One-Port USB Wall Charger (2.4 Amp) - Black (2-Pack)

I was fairly sure mine came with a brick as well. I wonder if he bought it used and the seller didn't include it/forget to include it.

I'm in Europe so I'd need a EU power adapter. My Analogue just came with an American adapter, so therefore I got some EU adapters on eBay, albeit only 1a.
So I'll need to upgrade to 2a now and see how it works. I'll be sure to report back here when done and tell you whether it solved the problem or not.

Thanks for the replies everyone, very helpful.

Do you have another original controller to test?

Happy update:

Purchased a 5v / 2a USB travel charger on eBay from China, and now everything is working smooth as butter!
