EverDrive 64 / EverDrive 64 2.5 and Donkey Kong 64

Hi, all, I was just testing out Donkey Kong 64 on my new ED64 2.5, and I get black-screen freezes when starting a new game (doesn't transition to intro). A reset will let you get in-game and past the intro, but entering Cranky's Hut will also freeze the game with a black screen. This is on OS 3.05, using both the No-Intro ROM and the confirmed good GoodN64 ROM (both same CRC).

On a whim, I dropped back to 2.13, and it seems to be working just fine. So I'm guessing something isn't quite right in the current OS version.

EverDrive GB / Normal battery usage with a ED-GB X3

Hi, all, I just managed to snag an AGS-101 GBA SP, and was wondering what the normal sort of battery life is for the GB X3. I haven't timed it perfectly, but I think I'm seeing around 3-4 hours as it is. Should I be getting more? I know the X3 is less power-hungry than the old ED-GB, but how comparable is it to a stock GB/GBC cart?

EverDrive N8 / Interesting file system behavior on N8

So, I've long speculated that the N8 seems to be "holding on" to an older memory address when changing out firmware and whatnot, which is why a full reformat is often necessary, or making sure a new EDFC folder gets written to a different part of the SD card.  Well, I think I may have some confirmation of that.

I've been having issues with RC4 (freezing in Batman), so I dropped it back to RC2, which seems to have fixed my problems.  Either that, or the fresh mapper install helped.  Regardless, the way I ended up doing the setup this time exposed a weird quirk:

- I originally took my old EDFC folder and moved it into a newly-created "BAK" folder.
- I extracted the new RC2 firmware to the card.
- I then decided, no, actually, I'm going to stick with RC4 and try something else, so I rename the RC2 "EDFC" folder to "EDFC1".  I then move the RC4 EDFC folder back to the root.
- I boot, and everything seems fine.  In fact, it seems like my Batman issues are resolved.  But...  my saves are missing.  Very curious behavior, especially since everything is in the EDFC folder.
- I check the EDFC1 folder, and apparently new saves are being written to that folder instead!  Which also means the N8 is probably using the firmware files from that directory as well.

Anyone have any insight as to why this is?  I assume it's something to do with how the N8 parses the file structure.  Anyway, it's very strange, and I don't know if there's anything that can be done about it on the dev end, but I thought I'd bring it up!

EverDrive N8 / Issue with Time Lord

So I've been playing Time Lord, and I've run into some issues.  The first one I noticed is that if you reload the game from a reset (in other words, kick back to the menu, then reload the game), the second orb in the second stage at the top of the tower is unobtainable.  It doesn't even spawn.

If you come in on a cold boot, it looks like it works okay, but getting to the 1943 time period, the first trench you jump into is supposed to have a gun to use, but it does not appear on the EDN8.

This is with a slightly older Smokemonster ROM set, using RC6, and the former case happens whether or not save states are on or off.  (Save states do mess with the game quite a bit, though, causing glitching and random pausing at times.)  The reset issue does not manifest if "reset to game" is on, but I don't know if the gun issue in the later stage still occurs.

I'm guessing this has something to do with how the game was coded, and it needs the NES to be initialized in a certain way or it breaks.  I've also noticed less accurate emulators (NesterJ on PSP) also have big problems with this game.

EDIT:  Okay, the gun thing might not be an issue.  Not sure.  I think I just didn't touch the corner it is squirreled away in.  The other issue persists, though.

Also, according to NesCartDB, this is an AMROM game.

EverDrive N8 / NES "powering off" while using N8

So, just a quick question:  I suspect the problem is the power supply, but I want to make sure.  I was running a few games using the N8, and the screen just went black, with no LED on the system.  I can power off and then power back on, and it will come back, but not for long.  I had one time die while loading a game (Just Breed), once during the menu, and once just in a game.

Thinking I shouldn't panic first, I swapped out to a Genesis Model 1 power supply, and I operated loading and running a good number of games for 30 minutes or so.  So I'm thinking the power supply is dying (OEM NES, by the way), and I'm hoping I didn't do it while accidentally using a Famicom game inserted incorrectly into a Hyperkin Famicom-to-NES converter.

Anyway, does this seem like behavior that is usually seen from a dying power supply?  Thanks.

(Also, running the latest beta firmware.)

Off Topic / Good Famicom-to-NES converter?

Figure this didn't really belong in the EDN8 thread, since I won't be using it with it, but does anyone have suggestions for a good Famicom-to-NES converter?  I see a lot on eBay super cheap from China, the Hyperkin one, Honey Bee, one on SAG...  I'm just curious as to what would fit my needs without breaking the bank.  My NES is already resistor-modded, so I have expansion audio.  I also am not sure it makes any sense to get a really expensive one, as at that point, I'd just buy a Famicom!

Turbo EverDrive / PC Engine Controller Adapter

So controllers for the PC Engine / Duo are pretty pricey.  Does anyone have experience with this adapter?

I'm assuming this is the one I would need for a PC Engine Duo (if memory serves, it's the American TG-16 that changed the controller hookup).

Turbo EverDrive / A question about how the Turbo CD interfaces with the system

I'm very aware that the TED only handles HuCard games, and am not asking for more than that.  I was curious, though, if it would even be possible to emulate the CD drive on a device similar to a TED?  I don't know enough about the internals of the system, but my understanding is that it's not like the Sega CD where it adds a lot of capabilities and a new processor.  Instead, it's basically adding RAM and giving an interface to the CD-ROM data.

So, does the CD drive send all of the data to the System Card, or does it directly connect in to other spots via the external connector?  Would it even be possible to emulate the redbook audio and stream it through the mono pin on the HuCard connector?

I'm just kinda curious if such a project would even be possible, and just wanted to ask someone more knowledgeable about the Duo / Super CD hardware.  Apologies for some potentially silly conjecture.

Turbo EverDrive / Question about Turbo EverDrive

So, I finally got crazy and snagged a PC Engine Duo off of eBay.  The seller says it works great with EverDrives (it's region-modded), which is good news!  I'm curious, though, as to whether 2.5 is the final revision or if KRIKzz has another one up his sleeve.    If not, I'm going to grab the model.

Also, any recommendation on whether to buy straight from KRIKzz or through Stone Age Gamer?  I've gotten carts both ways, and was happy with both.  I think the pricing after using my points at SAG will be pretty much the same.

EverDrive N8 / Confusion regarding save files

Okay, I have a really dumb question.  I just managed to wipe out my save file in Crystalis (accidentally restored state when I didn't need to), and was trying to replace it.  I'm assuming the save files are effectively the .nes files in the /EDFC/SAVE folder.  However, when I used a hex editor to get the desired save file in (which works fine in emulators), the EDN8 actually refuses to take the save file.  Instead, it keeps latching on to the save file that was there, regardless of what I do.  Hex edit?  Still uses the old one.  Delete and replace?  Uses the old one.  Delete entirely to get a fresh save?  Still uses the old one.  I even reformatted the card, copied everything back over without the save file and it still clung to it.  I have no idea where it's getting the data from!  Is it hanging around in the SRAM on the cart?  Even if there isn't a file on there, it is both able to restore the SRAM and the save state, which is really, really puzzling.

After fighting with this, I figured, why not just rename the ROM to something that didn't have a save, and then it worked.  But I don't find that to be an adequate solution, particularly since I'm thinking of copying in some of my save games I've dumped from my actual carts.  So...  what's going on here?
