Title: Individual N8 Mapper Updates (unofficial)...
Post by: goombakid on September 10, 2015, 06:17 AM
So far, some awesome forum members here have have been helping by improving some mappers. I'm setting this as the sticky for now. Any updates for mappers are encouraged to be linked in this thread.

Special thanks to Necronomfive and Slamy for their work.

Currently have the following available. As always, please use caution when using these.

Sunsoft 5B:

Thanks. I got my Everdrive N8 a little over a year ago, so I'm not sure exactly how mapper updates work. Will they be added to the next OS update, or will we always have to manually load them ourselves?

The mappers are binary configuration files for the FPGA. If you load a game the adequate binary file will be loaded.
Just overwrite the specific RBF file inside EDFC/MAPS/ with the custom one.
If they shall be included in the official package is a good question.... if not maybe we can assemble a "community package" optimized for the various NES types if needed.

the only worry i have with custom mappers is if any games that used to work will get broken. i'm sure i read in one of the threads that a game which used to work on krikzz's mapper stopped working on a custom mapper.
i think we need a list of troublesome games and whats working and whats not using official and custom mappers.
and i said this in another thread that is would be great if the guys working on these improved mappers and krikzz could come to an understanding so the best most compatible mapper versions could be released in official OS update packages all good to go or otherwise things may get a little confusing for us noobs if loads more custom mappers are made.
it would also be cool if there was a list of troublesome games in general stating the issues and when a game is fixed it can be checked off the list, low gravity man has been fixed with an hack for example.
i read in a thread that death race don't work properly and also crash test dummies has problems despite mappers for these games being supported.
it's great that people are working hard to make the N8 even better than it already is and from what i gather the nes can be a pain compatibility wise with all the different mappers and so on but hopefully one day compatibility can be almost perfect for what is already a great flash cart.

By demand i added more volumes to my mapper. Here is a graphical summary of all currently available versions:

little hint about custom mappers instalation:
Some .rbf files may handle few mappers, for example 022.RBF contains implementation for mappers 21,22,23,25,85. So, if you just replace the file, all other mappers will not work anymore. I offer use some unused mapper number for custom mapper, and retrace mapper 22 to new file. To retrace mapper to another file, just need to write new mapper number in MAPROUT.BIN. Let say we will use 224.RBF for alternate implementation of mapper 22, then we need write 0xE0 (224 in hex) at offset 22 in MAPROUT.BIN, after that OS will use 224.RBF for mapper 22, instead of 022.RBF

Developer request to KRIKzz... ;-)

Since the FPGA has more than enough HW multipliers, I would suggest to implement an 8-bit volume setting into the next OS revision. This way, the user could match the volume setting much more precisely to their HW setup.

Regarding expansion audio and mapper tweaking, do you guys test music and sounds just using your hearing? I have found this method at superuser.com for checking differences between two audio recordings in an objective manner:

"If you truly want an objective measure, load both files into a tool that can do basic effects processing and mixing (Audacity for instance), and then invert one and mix them together. What ever is left is the difference between the two files - if they were identical, only pure silence should remain."

by Derek Charles

Maybe this method or any other audio analysis could help to improve expansion audio on Everdrive N8 even further?

Pretty sure Uncharted Waters is MMC5, which is only partially supported.

Any idea which one I should be using with my AV Famicom for the best sound mix?

EDIT: finally found the right answer and that's the 75_70 one. What a huge improvement from the stock mapper. Thanks, Slamy!

The PCM still sounds really dull unfortunately, but the VRC6 synth channels sound much closer to the way they're supposed to. I can actually play Akumajo Densetsu without getting furious at the terrible sound mix now.

I wondered if someone could clarify the process on installing these new mappers.  I understand that just replacing the mapper files is all that's required, or is there another file that needs updating to?  I noticed that some of them have a different name - ie. the mapper name number, rather than just a number plus extension.  Is some renaming required?  Ideally I would like to add all of the new mappers in the earlier part of this thread, but I don't want to lose any other mappers.
Title: Re: Individual N8 Mapper Updates (unofficial)...
Post by: Great Hierophant on August 14, 2016, 08:22 PM
First, you download the official OS and put it on your SD card.  Then you download the mapper zip.  In the archive there will be a file called xxx.RBF and sometimes a file called MAPROUT.BIN.  Copy them to the MAPS subdirectory.

In the case of Mapper 24, you must select the appropriate file, depending on the relative volume mix you want, and rename it to 024.RBF.

The RBF tells the FPGA how to configure itself to emulate the mapper in question.  The MAPROUT.BIN file tells the firmware what mappers are supported on the system.

If you are concerned about losing mappers by overwritng the existing MAPROUT.BIN file, you can hex edit the MAPROUT.BIN file to add the missing mappers back in.  The file is 512 bytes and each byte in the first 256 bytes refers to an iNES mapper and the RBF that supports it.

Can you make a comparison video? it would be really helpful for whomever decides to tackle this particular mapper's sound.

I can, but there are videos up on Youtube with some of the Namco games like King of Kings, Final Lap, and JP Rolling Thunder without the buzzing and beeping, so it's clear it's not supposed to be happening. Final Lap sometimes buzzes when I pause it on the Everdrive.

Quick question: which mapper files should I get for the AV Famicom if the sound is too loud? Since the mix command has been removed, everything is wayyyyyyy too loud, FDS especially.

Anyone has the Download of Sunsoft5B and VRC7 ones?

There's no VRC7 sound support yet my friend. The mapper you will find here was meant for Lagrange Point to be playable, however no sound was implemented yet. A short time later Kkrikz added official support for the mapper on his own, but no sound support yet. It seems to be very complicated mapper to be emulated, as no one has bothered to in several years.

I have however, the ones for Sunsoft 5B and VRC6 back at home. Send me a reminder message later and I will send them to you.

Will it ever be possible for uncharted waters for nes to work? I think it's great that people are doing this. I mean I'm excited but they're still games that aren't working so I guess it's sort okay. I've been wanting that game supported for a long time maybe in the future thanks for everyone that tries to improve the support

If you have the skill I'd say go for it. If you wait for Krikzz you might find yourself waiting for several years as he usually takes many different projects at the same time, and rarely perfects one before moving to the next. If he did we wouldn't have as many everdrives as we do now, but I wish he had a partner developer who'd work on these OSes in parallel.

There is this Famiclone Game "Strike Wolf" I really love. Sadly I can just play the first level on my Everdrive as the game sets back to level 1 upon completion of said level.

The problem was well known for the FCEUX emulator and is now fixed. In GitHub files are distributed:
https://github.com/TASVideos/BizHawk/blob/master/BizHawk.Emulation.Cores/Consoles/Nintendo/NES/Boards/Mapper036.cs
With some documentation here:
http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/INES_Mapper_036

Is there any hope a fix will come for the Everdrive someday?

Since "audio mix vol" option now always "Hi" what VRC6 RBF file will be the most correct for Akumajou Densetsu?
People say 100_75 but do they use the HI or LO setting from the old firmware?; I assume LO.
A file format as such 24Mod_75_70.RBF means 75 HI and 70 LO, so for current firmware locked on HI, I would choose 24Mod_75_70.RBF.

Also, people add a 24k-100k resistor to their NES to restore external audio functionality, and use the N8 with one of these RBF files, that is too many variables to be accurate.
What would be the correct RBF file for the AV Famicom which does not require any modification?
Can anyone please post a recording samples of the real Akumajou Densetsu cartridge in a real AV Famicom so I can fine tune for myself?

Since the fixed mappers becoming hard to find here are the latest (03.2018) VRC6, VRC7, 5B individually zipped:

I have been testing the VRC6 RBF files in Slamy's archive to find the correct balance for the AV Famicom and the Everdrive N8 Famicom version.
Note that the AV Famicom has quieter internal sound in comparison to the original Famicom therefor the 75_70 file is way louder than it should.

My findings:
24Mod_50_25.RBF is still slightly louder in comparison to the original Famicom and various emulators, but very close indeed.
24Mod_22_20.RBF is much too quiet.

I have PMed Slamy in hope he will receive an email and maybe create more presets in between 50 and 22.

Hello you all. I've made an update in the VRC6 thread.I hope that this will do.
http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=3391.0 (http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=3391.0)

I'm fascinated that I'm the only one supplying multiple volumes. To be honest I haven't really analyzed the schematics of the different NES / Famicom version. I've just checked with Castlevania III on my own NES which has an Poti sticking out of the back for fine justage. This is why I prefer my 100% version because of better signal to noise ratio. But of course this seems to be incompatible with other Mappers.

Hi Slamy. I haven't checked what the VRC6 mapper is set at within the mapper download I attached to this post above but I find the volume perfect with no distortion etc. Definetly loud enough imo. Using a 27inch Sony Trinitron with a US nes + Enio exp board fyi
Title: Re: Individual N8 Mapper Updates (unofficial)...
Post by: James-F on March 14, 2018, 11:07 AM
The problem with the US Nes is it is modified with a resistor which itself is an aproximation along with the EDN8 VRC6 volume aproximation.
To find the correct balance that sounds like the original Famicom and original cartridge is a guesswork without proper equipment and a sharp ear.

What's more, what is the reference recording for Famicom+Akumajou Densetsu?
Mine was various recordings of the Analog NT (on Youtube), Emulators, NesDev forum, and other Youtube videos.
All of the above were practical identical in terms of balance between Internal and VRC6.

Download the new one provided by Slamy called 24VRC6ModV3.zip for more volume variations between 50 and 22.
*All the same name files are identical in both versions.

Any updates to the MMC5 mapper 005.RBF? I would really like to get Nobunaga's Ambition II into a playable state. If there are no updates, where can I find the information on the RBF file format? I might try programming my own updates to the mapper. From what I have read the problem is that MMC5 EX-RAM is not supported.

So, I have the source, and I have figured out the version of Quartus I should use, but I forgot to ask, what device do I target the compile for? Any else I should know? I have written lots of code, and I plan to look at the MAME code base for the NES to see how to implement mapper 5 since it works there, but I have never used Quartus before or programmed a FPGA or a CPLD however I have designed complex discrete logic circuits.

Usually the source code comes with a .qpf file which is a quartus project and should give you a configuration to start with.
The device is a EP2C5T144C8.
Please keep in mind that the source code is not only logic. You also need a .pin configuration file to configure which signal is mapped to which pin.
I have used Quartus only once for this project as I was used more to Xilinx devices.

Anybody know what VRC6 RBF file I need for an original Famicom? Also 069.RBF crashes my console to a black screen when I attempt to load Gimmick!, in conjunction with the MAPROUT.bin that came with the 085.RBF by necromfive(?).

Make sure you unzip the file to the hard drive first. I also found deleting the old 069.RBF file before putting the new one on the SD card works better than overwriting it.

You definitely don't want to do an overwrite.  The ED is very sensitive to disk fragmentation.  I often do a full wipe and recopy when upgrading the OS, including the games.

Sadly, same here.
Adding files may even corrupt save states, seems unrelated but it does.

Since the fixed mappers becoming hard to find here are the latest (03.2018) VRC6, VRC7, 5B individually zipped:

only vrc6 have the volume settings files? why other 2 mappers not?
now with the new OS v20 HI option is disappeared and i need a volume boost because on famicom the sound is totally low now

Despite following both of your suggestions, including doing a full format of my SD card, I also keep getting "Error 65 Disk IO error" with both v20 beta1 and beta2. I've even used FAT Sorter on the EDFC folder but still have problems, however when I do the same thing on the EDFC folder on the official v16 OS I have no issues at all. I'm guessing it's simply because these are beta versions and that all the bugs haven't been worked out yet?

You can try to do a full format (fat32 4kb) as a last resort.
If this doesn't work, find a new sd card.

Did that too. Full format, both FAT and FAT32, used a 2GB SD card and a 8GB SD card, still get the same error. It props up randomly. Sometimes it'll show, sometimes not. But I reiterate, I don't have this problem at all with v16 with any of my SD cards.

How do I configure maprout.bin to work with my three custom mappers as well as those on the new os update from this week?

Ugh, I've given up on the v20-betas. Now it won't even boot up at all when I try to put a fully formatted, FAT32 w/ 4kb cluster size 2GB SD card in my N8 and now all I keep getting is "ERROR: 52 - FAT INITIALIZATION ERROR". Idk why I have such bad luck trying to run the v20-betas, because every time I put back my 2GB SD card that has OS v16 in it, it works without a hassle.

Everdrive N8 does not work with OS20 and blinking light win. I am not sure why? Voltage problems with the cic chip on the blinking light win?

I have a blinking light win and besides some glitches, os20 works.
