SD2SNES fixes vertical line issue?
« on: July 28, 2016, 10:33 PM »
Here's something weird I've noticed lately. If I pop in one of my SA-1 or SFX chip games (Yoshi's Island, StarFox) I get that ugly vertical line down the middle of the screen. However when I use the SD2SNES it disappears almost completely. What magic tricks could the SD2SNES be using to improve the visuals? For reference this shows up when using composite and component (HDRetrovision) cables into my Samsung TV.

For those unaware of the issue

Here's someone fixing it on their own by adding capacitors to the SNES.

It could be a capacitor issue, by the way what model is your SNES (1st, JR)?

The SNES has had this issue since day one, sometimes more, sometimes less pronounced. Can get pretty annoying  ::)
The sd2snes reduces this issue as a side effect of one part of the power filter added from Rev.F onward. (100uF ceramic capacitor between +5V and GND near the cartridge slot)

Very cool Ikari. Thanks for the information!

Just last night after digging deeper into this vertical line stuff I found that adding a capacitor (470uf 16v) to the 5v regulator that it makes the line completely disappear for the sd2snes where as it makes it almost invisible on regular carts. I could take it a step further and add another capacitor to the video processing unit but will hold off on further solder jobs.

My pic from last night

I did the mod shown in the RetroRGB page, although I only used one cap on the rgb encoder.  It works pretty well and with SD2SNES I cannot really see the white line.  Some solid colors have jailbars.

I read on another forum that the encoder chip and the 5v are on the same rail so instead of adding two 220s (one on the encoder and one on the 5v) I added 1 470 on the 5v which apparently yields the same result. Less solder points too :)

This is one area where the SNES PowerPak is deficient, it accentuates the white line compared to the SD2SNES and original carts.

Wow, I never saw that capacitor fix until now. Very cool, and simple. Does it apply to all SNES revisions?

There's word going around that it doesn't effect 1CHIP SNES as much as SHVC or SNS models but I've seen people post 1CHIP with vertical lines however they are fainter. In my opinion if you're running a SNES on a modern day LCD TV, this is a must "mod" regardless of the model.

The fix work also for crt and one chip consoles (with more capacitors)  :
I found it last year and i was thinking :  sd2snes fix the issue because it drains more power ,  until ikari revealed it is due to the rev.F capacitor ,
 (mine is a rev. E modded in rev.F) .

Now , i can see plainly how this rev.F mod is useful  :)
