This topic on nesdev http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9242&view=previous it covers what needs to be done to get the expansion audio out of the powerpak and onto the top loader. This needs to be done this way in case anyone doesn't know or is interested because the nes-101 lacks pins 18, 19, 54, and 55. Since no one has the NES version yet besides krikzz this is more of a question for him. Is the pin-out the same meaning is the audio pin in question is 54 and is pin 51 unused so it's safe to bridge them and just follow the powerpak's tutorial? Or is there some other combo of pins we will need to bridge and then change the pin we solder the resistor on inside the nes accordingly?

edit: It didn't occur to me to just look at the pins on the pic that was posted of the N8-NES itself since it's a pic of the back of the board where the pins in question are. It does look like there is a trace going to pin 54 which would make sense since it's been stated that as long as you have your regular nes modded to support the expansion audio it will work just fine. Also it seems that pin 51 is unused so I'm going to assume that pending confirmation from krikzz that you should be able to just follow the instructions from nesdev.

I got my N8 in today, modded it and the expansion audio works perfectly. I just wanted to put a pic of what it looks like modded for the top loader in case anyone else needs to do the same. I ended up putting a 2k potentiometer in between the audio pin and pin 51 on the mother board so I could adjust it to my liking instead of just using the 1.2k resistor. I have an AV modded top loader so I ripped the RF box out and put the potentiometer in the hole left there like this.

Sorry for the picture quality I had to use a webcam but it works for these.

And a pic of the cart.

I'm pretty sure you did not need to mod the Everdrive N8. As far as I know it already have the proper connection on the PCB and only require the NES to have the resistor mod in order to enjoy extra sound channel.

The NES-101 doesn't have pins 18, 19, 54, and 55 on the cartridge connector and the N8 uses pin 54. You need to bridge it to an unused pin that isn't used on both the cartridge and the system, in this case pin 51.

Ah sorry, I didn't realise you were using a Top Loader. I just saw the cart mod and didn't pay enough attention to the rest of the details.

What about front loader does the N8 need a mod for that too?

Really...I kinda expected you to jump those pins on the pcb layout and just have it come that way, oh well.

So does the N8 for Famicom emulate the sound chips from Famicom Castlevania 3 and Mr. Gimmick, or is there actually a special sound chip on the N8 just for this purpose?

Just curious how the audio from the Famicom games with special audio chips is accomplished on flash carts.

.....those are completely different chips, it's using fpga to emulate this stuff.

Will the audio mod work on a top loader without modifying the Everdrive cart? (and without using a Famicom ED + converter)

You're gonna have to mod the Everdrive because pin 54 (which is used for audio on the Everdrive) is physically missing on the top loader.

Okay, I didn't know if the ED only output audio through the one pin.

hello i own a RGB modded US toploader NES and just ordered a N8 everdrive but i also own a PAL frontloader

will the Everdrive N8 work in both consoles after apllying this audio mod?

and is the audio fix required in general in all US toploader consoles or could i have be lucky and it will be fine when i first going to try it out?

thank you in advance
