Castlevania 3
« on: October 26, 2018, 03:55 PM »
Has anybody tried playing castlevania 3 using the everdrive n8?
I tried it with OS 16 and it doesn't work.
Then I tried OS 20 beta 1 and it still didn't work.

I am using a retroUSB AVS to play.  I haven't had any issues with other games at all.  Even a bunch of rom hacks that I like to play.

Let me know if you guys can or can't get it to work.

Thanks

I use the superior Japanese version (Akumajou Densetsu) translated to English using this patch;

https://www.romhacking.net/translations/730/

Then use the following patch to localize the game to have the correct title screen and names etc

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1983/

Lastly, use this patch to improve the controls

The JP version uses a different mapper (full MMC5 support was just added to the betas), VRC6, rather than MMC5. US CVIII also has a few differences from the JP version that make it worth playing.

That last hack is for the american version, that's what corrupts your japanese rom.

Incorrect sir. The last hack is specifically for the Japanese version of the Rom. All 3 of these hacks is how I've been playing the game personally.

Regarding the US vs Jap regional differences, have a read of this link which clearly explains the differences so you can see why in my opinion it's superior. Yes the US version fixed several graphical errors but I prefer the slightly lower difficulty, uncensored game and enhanced audio anytime over the US version.

I also have both the US and Jap versions on my EverDrive. Play them on my US console which contains an Enio Exp audio board to enable expanded audio and you can clearly hear how much better the sound is in the Jap version compared to the US version.

I found the music in the US version to be extremely good for the NES sound chip, though I do prefer the JP tunes. The US CVIII also has a more difficult second loop. I don't feel CV needs a control improvement hack. Anyway, I recommend playing both versions and trying out one of the later everdrive beta firmwares (though I recommend RC 4-6 over RC7 since RC7 hates AVS and is less accurate with MMC3) since other MMC5 games work with it too.

Well my rom works on an emulator, but it never loads when I try to run it on my N8.
I am using a RetroUSB AVS FPGA clone system to run the N8.

I have the most current OS supplied by Castlemania games as well.

It's a little frustrating I suppose.  Is there a way to determine if the rom is corrupted?

If the ROM came from a zip file, unzip it first, and then move it to the SD card.

The rom is not in zip format.
I did test it in an emulator and it works there, but does not work on the N8.

I just can't seem to understand why it won't work for me and it works for others.

Could you guys tell me which OS you are using in your N8 that the rom works with?

Thanks

I'm in the same boat with the US Castlevania III rom. Will not run on my N8 with the latest OS saying MMC5 is fully supported. My system is an NES front loader with the kevtris hi-def nes board. Please help!
