(Updated image to a slightly clearer one taken with a poor quality capture USB.)
If you don't spot the problem, it's the main character's sprites. They have little 'cells' of their sprites that are not correctly displaying. Is this a problem with the everdrive, or with my ROM? I had my copy of Final Fantasy stolen last year when someone took my luggage.

... Krikzz, I collect stamps, so I was thrilled to get some from Ukraine in the mail! Also, thank you for an outstanding product!

This was done on a front loading NTSC NES. My top loader was decimated a few years ago by my experiments and I haven't had time to replace every chip on the thing yet.

Final Fantasy uses MMC1 (which is mapper 1) which is supported by the everdrive. It must be your rom or hardware.

Confirmed! It was a bad dump.
It appears to work perfectly in FCEUX, but when i ran it in nestopia, the battles showed a different bug, but a bug nonetheless. I got a new dump and tried it in nestopia and it worked fine. Then i put it on my everdrive and it still appears to be working fine.

Probably a MMC1 mapper bug, with timing.

Uhh, pay no attention to my last comment...
It's happening again.
It only seems to be happening with the characters that share the same palette.

I really don't think it should be doing this. Is it possible there's a timing or mapper glitch in MMC1?

I've defragged my memory card and everything, so I don't think that's it.

Actually, I noticed that I don't get the bug when using my older NES. My r11 board gives this problem, but I have one with the r7 board, and there's no problem at all. Neither of my systems have mods (besides the lockout chip, expansion sound mod, and the r10 one has a blue LED instead of a red one).

My everdrive:
The 72-pin NES n8
a 4gb SDHC card

My NES:
Original North American Front loader. uses the rev11 board.
My other NES:
Original North American Front Loader with rev7 board.
My (broken) nes:
NES-101 Top-loader, USA, circa 1993.

It must be a problem with your r11 then. You don't have problems with any other supported game?

That's what I call mods. ;D

I just cleaned up my pin connector on my r7 and i'm getting it on that one too, suddenly. I tried a fresh pin connector, too.

I read online that the sixth byte in the iNES header for the most common final fantasy dump (Final fantasy (U) [!].nes) has the sixth byte (12) wrong; it should be 13. I tried to change it to 13 and run it, but still have the bug. Every version of the ROM i've found has this bug on both of my NES systems. I feel like it's probably an everdrive bug, but I have no powerpak/original cart to test this theory anymore.

Also, none of the other games I've played have given me problems (although I haven't tried any other MMC1 games yet). Both my NESes are giving me that bug now.

Every hack of final fantasy I've found (besides Grond's Final Fantasy, which was hacked to use MMC3) experiences this bug.

That's what I call mods. ;D
Someday, I will do a real mod, like RGB out. Someday...

I have tried downgrading my OS to v6, but still have the bug. I'm back on 1.7 now. I really think that this is a powerpak (edit: everdrive) bug, or else present on original carts. Does anyone have an original cart to verify?

This kind of bug is obviously not present on the real cart. Someone with an N8 should verify if they have the same bug or not.

You mean the same glitchy effect as shown in the 1st post?? I have ED N8 Famicom ver with OS v7 and have no glitchy graphics whatsoever, the photo must show some problem with the console or the rom itself

Tried out my top loader (now fixed) and my friend's av famicom. They both had the same issue (using my n8)

yeah, first post. I have the 72-pin NES version (used with famicom AV via an adapter). Wondering if it's a bug in the hardware or the mappers, because the MMC3 hack that Grond made does not exhibit the issue.

Since it's not your console it must be either your N8 or the rom you are using. Try another rom first.

I was using my own dump, but another one that I obtained totally legally that goodNES sees as the good dump is also giving me this issue.

So it's your EDN8 then. But first try to use a rom from the GoodNES and No-Intro romsets. If it still doesn't work you could ask Krikzz if there's anything more you can do or if you need to send it back to him.

my guess is that it is because you are running it on an HDTV, try running it on a CRT tube tv and see if it does it there as well. when running retro games on a HDTV there are lines not filled in with much cuz of how CRTs worked, the HDTV will try to fill in the colors and sometimes it ends up weird like this. i think it is because the sprites are rendered on a black background it is making it hard for hte tv to be able to tell if it needs to fill it in with black or the face color that is used in the sprite. that is my theory anyways
