GBA "x7" (Standard Size) to be released soon?
« on: August 27, 2019, 05:16 PM »
There was a lot of discussion in the EZ Flash Omega thread, which I am not sure why. I thought it would be better for this to get it's own topic.

I agree that it shouldn't be called an "x7", because that implies that there are new features and not just a shrunken cart. But let's not get into a meaningless debate. Krikzz is referring it as the x7 as well, so let's just leave it at that.

I always held off purchasing the x5.  That cartridge sticking out would irk me.  I felt it was inevitable that an x7 would be released in a standard cart size.

I still have an EZ Flash IV that plays standard GBA games just fine. I'm actually still on the fence. I don't do rom hacking, homebrew, emulation. And I have all the RTC Pokemon games. EZ Flash IV no longer needing an outside patching software was a huge gain as well. So that is why I am still ok with an EZ Flash IV atm. But I love Krikzz's products. Maybe once my EZ Flash IV finally craps out, I will buy an GBA x7.

I grew up and adapted to love the Super Card SD before the X5 was first made. It was a much more compact smaller sized cart kind of like how a GBA cartridge looks like and best of all it didn't stick out the bottom while the other usually got knocked around as it poked under the area so my hands always knocked it usually when in the heat of gaming of sweat.

The only factor I suppose the X5 had was the usage of various embedded emulators it could run, GG, SMS and NES to name a few.

The only downside is it had no support for PC Engine games or Turbografx-16 for that matter... only premade sets can play those ones. I did hear a lot of it getting a dead battery so likely that issue needs to be resolved first and foremost.

But if it's true it will be the same size as a GBA cart that is a step forward over the Yoshi Topsy-Turvy sized cart the X5 used.

I'm pretty sure both x5 and x7 will share this new redesign but with different set of features. Ther emight even be room for an 'x3' that cuts out some of the features like the 'RTC' to save money.

It wouldn't make sense to make two different models with same feature set and charge more for the 'smaller one' when the parts should be about the same price for both... It's much easier to just build with one design in mind as well, rather than creating confusing two models that 'do the same thing'.  Say for example following ED-GB line, X5 costing $90-100, and x7 costing $120-130.... If they do the same thing, instead of selling both he should only sell the new one to avoid confusion...

Infact, if they are the same things (except maybe a upgraded FPGA), maybe going the route of "N8 Pro" or the "SD2SNES Pro" would make for a better naming convention... Even SD2SNES Pro went through two revisions one that was full size cart (like Famicom) size, and the others that were smaller and could fit in a SNES style case.

eh. It doesn't really matter at this point. Krikzz is referring it as the "x7". So for now, I guess it's the project name at least. It could change, it could not.

It would be great if Krikzz still read his own forums sometimes.
That way he could comment and clear up the confusion.

eh, I know some might say I am being fanboy. But 99.9% of the questions are answered on here or his Twitter. Yea, you have to go digging around, but it's not that big a deal.

It'd be hard to go through every single question, especially when people are asking about future projects that even Krikzz is probably unsure of.

For this, it just seems like people just want more in regards to the x7. If you look at his Twitter, it's pretty straight forward. The x7 is basically the same GBA Everdrive but in a standard cart size.

Honestly, what realistic features could he add?

I would like a GB/GBC & GBA cart in one. But that's being unrealistic.

What most of his x7 lines have (Mega ED X7, and ED-GB x7)... "Save states", and built in "cheat options". THat's basic, same stuff that competion includes at least... It's what what the EDGB X7 includes beyond cheaper x3 and x5 (although with EDGB RTC is also one of its main selling features, something X5 already has).

He does need to add an improved RTC method, as current method can only track one game at a time. I think EDGBx7 handles multiple RTC games in a better manner.

And GBA-DS linkage support. Krikzz said he "can't see any sense for NOR flash" which sounds like he didn't understand the question.

I don't know if it has to be NOR flash but as long as it's possible for the Everdrive to behave like real GBA cartridges do with a rom of the user's choosing, I would be happy.

I think it needs to be able to hold a single game into memory somehow. Non volatile for the GBA linkage to work. NOR or otherwise. Then offering a mode in which the flashcart can directly load into that that rom. So that from a DS games perspective it reads header data from that rom, and not the flashcart itself.

If he could get saves working correctly for transfers in Pokemon, and other problematic 'data transfer' games, he'd have one of the best flashcarts out there.

Yes that's the one big thing that's still missing.

2 years ago, and whatever his plans are now are two different things. At this point there could very well be a new revision of X5 as wel as a new release of the X7, but in the new form factor.

Lots of carts updated with no new features (e.g. everdrive64 v3 - a low volume product) while this one is not released.

Time doesn't stand still.. analogue pocket might get my money instead.
