Input Display on SD2SNES Pro with USB2SNES Firmware
« on: January 10, 2020, 07:03 PM »
Hi everybody,

I know USB2SNES is a custom firmware by a different person (redguy https://github.com/RedGuyyyy/sd2snes/releases), but I am really struggling with getting the input viewer functionality to work correctly while playing SMW rom hacks. The dpad and y/b buttons are the only buttons that light up on the display. I'm confused about why this is happening. I feel like if the display is showing two buttons, it should be showing all of the buttons.

Is this just something that isn't working on the SD2SNES Pro yet? If so, that'd be pretty disappointing.

Do all buttons work in games?

All buttons work in these SMW hacks, but the display is not showing up.

SMW has a peculiar memory layout for controller input (one portion of the buttons is two bytes away from the other in RAM). I've been tinkering with Input Viewer lately and can't it to work correctly for SMW because there seems to be no way to specify individual addresses for the two separate locations to pull the controller input from, it always assumes that the bytes are right next to each other. Therefore A, X, L, R can't be displayed correctly.
It would be a suggestion to the author of Input Viewer to support "scattered" controller input bytes ;)

Then I'm a little confused on how so many of the SMW streamers show their inputs. Most of them play on Super NT or SNES with an SD2SNES. Any ideas on how this works?

I figured this out. I bought an extension cable for my SNES controller and found the NintendoSpy guide that talked about splicing the cable and using an Arduino to display the inputs.

Works!
